A presentation copy of the first published work of English critic, journalist, poet and acquaintance of the Romantic circle John Abraham Heraud (1799-1887). The Chambers Cyclopedia of English Literature, perhaps rather too flatteringly, suggested that Heraud was to contemporary epic poetry what John Martin was to epic art: 'a worshipper of the vast, the remote, and the terrible'.
