[GRESWELL, Edward]. Europæ pacatores oxonium invisentes.

[Manchester]. [R. and W. Dean], [1815]. First edition.
Quarto. [2], 8pp, [2]. Uncut, stitched, as issued, in original publisher's powder blue wrappers. Lightly rubbed, creased. Later manuscript annotations to upper wrapper and title page signed William H. P. Greswell, occasional highlighting. A.L.S. on Brasenose College stationery pinned to upper wrapper: '9 Nov. 1916. Dear Mr. Greswell, I write to thank you heartily for sending me the interesting Latin verses written by your uncle on the occasion of the visit of the Allied Sovereigns. We did not possess a copy of it, and shall be glad to have one in the college library. We have several of your uncle's works in our collection of the works of Brasenose authors. Yours sincerely C. B. Heberden'.
The second located copy of the sole edition of a neo-Latin verse composed by biblical scholar Edward Greswell (1797-1869) whilst an undergraduate of Brasenose College, Oxford, upon the occasion of the visit of the allied sovereigns of Europe to the university following the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

The attribution of authorship - which does not appear to have been recorded - is due entirely to this unique copy, once in possession of Edward Grewell's descendant, Church of England clergyman, William Henry Parr Greswell (1848-1923). The latter Greswell's manuscript annotations, which reveal both the identity of the author and the circumstances of the poems composition, concludes with the rather humorous observation: 'To-day (1914) the welcome to Prussia's King reads strangely!'

Not in OCLC; COPAC records a single copy at Oxford - presumably the copy supplied to Brasenose by Greswell as mentioned in the attached letter signed by Principal of the college Charles Buller Heberden (1849-1921).
