The first edition of Church of Ireland clergyman and minor poet Jerome Alley's (1760- 1826) verse analysis of judicial fortitude occasioned by the death of Lord Chancellor John Fitzgibbon, first Earl of Clare (1748-1802). The Monthly Review (September, 1804, p.94) were unimpressed by Alley's efforts: '...as a whole, it is not calculated to excite any great degree of admiration. Its wants force and animation to rouse and attract the reader's attention; and, in the use of figurative language, the metaphor is overstrained, and loses its beauty and effect.'
Jackson p.270.
