An essay on conversation.
London.
Printed for L. Gilliver and J. Clarke, 1737.
First edition.
Folio.
[2], 19pp, [1]. Recent marbled papers boards. Minor shelf-wear. Leaves lightly creased, short tear to gutter of title page, scattered spotting.
The first edition of influential botanist and writer Benjamin Stillingfleet's (1702-1771) competent but uninspired sub-Popian poem on cultivated life and the proper use of language, written partly in criticism of Richard Bentley who had vetoed Stillingfleet's hopes of a Fellowship at Cambridge. Some fairly stircit rules are laid down which, followed to the letter, would render the majority of discussions unworkable.
