An anthology of hymns and spiritual songs intended for the use of the United Presbyterian Church, a denomination formed in 1847 by the union of the United Secession Church and the Relief Church, which in turn merged in 1900 with the Free Church of Scotland to form the United Free Church of Scotland (later itself to merge with the Church of Scotland). For much of its existence, the Church was the third largest in Scotland, and aligned with the liberal wing of Scots Presbyterianism.
