MUIRHEAD BONE'S COPY
The Dawn in Britain.
London.
Duckworth & Co., 1906.
First edition.
8vo.
In six volumes. Original publisher's green cloth, lettered in gilt. A trifle rubbed and marked. Very occasional light spotting. Inked ownership inscription of printmaker and draughtsman Muirhead Bone (1876-1953) to FFEP of Vol. I, pencil portrait sketch of Doughty pasted to FEP.
The first edition of explorer and poet Charles Montagu Doughty's (1843-1926) epic poem of early Britain. The 30,000-line poem, composed in pentameter, though received with some warmth at time of publication, has somewhat sunk into obscurity, overshadowed by Doughty's success as a travel writer.
