João Carlos Celestino Gomes (1899-1960) was a Portuguese doctor, teacher, painter, and writer, who belonged to the second generation Portuguese Modernist movement. While his art was presented under the name João Carlos, he wrote widely on subjects from art history of contemporary fiction, under the name Celestino Gomes.
The recipient of this copy was Cyril Ernst Kenney (1898-1973), bibliophile, chartered surveyor, and author of The Quadrant and the Quill; A book written in honour of Captain Samuel Sturmy, "a tryed and trusty Sea-man," and author of The Mariner's Magazine, 1669.
