First published in 1790, the book cemented Bewick's reputation as one of the foremost wood-engravers operating in Britain. The work was begun as early 1781, with the descriptive text supplied primarily by Bewick's colleague Ralph Beilby (bap. 1743, d. 1817); it proved immensely popular, reaching seven editions by 1820 totalling some 14,000 copies.
