The first edition of the collected verse by English landscape gardener and writer John Scott (1731-1783), known as Scott of Amwell. The first prominent Quaker poet, Scott's legacy would be reduced to that of his anti-war poem 'The Drum' (Ode 13) by the twentieth-century. Reprinted widely, the ode was set to music by numerous composers, including Quaker composer Ned Rorem, who invoked the poem in his song cycle 'Aftermath' (2001), an immediate pacifist reaction to the warmongering efforts which followed the attacks of 9/11.
