Robert Seymour Bridges (1844 -1930) was a British writer who produced poetry, prose, and hymns, and who was Poet Laureate from 1913 to 1930. He developed a new phonetic spelling of the English language, created the poetic theory of elision, and translated many hymns from Ancient Greek, Latin and German. A devoted Christian, Bridges was instrumental in the posthumous fame of fellow Christian Hymn writer Gerard Manley Hopkins.
