Charles Diehl (1859-1944), French historian and leading authority on Byzantine art and history. There is a street named after him in Thessaloniki, near the Byzantine Holy Church of Hagia Sophia, whose current structure dates from the seventh century. Diehl was instrumental in it's restoration in the early twentieth century, and it has since been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
