John Erskine (1879-1951) was an American educator, author, and musician. Over an illustrious and prolific career he authored over 100 works, and instigated the literary General Honors course at Columbia University, based on the 'Great Books' programme.
He taught at both Amherst College and Columbia University, was the first president of the Juilliard School of Music, and the first chairman of the American Writers Association. While Private Life received critical acclaim, it is for his essay The Moral Obligation to Be Intelligent (1915) that he is perhaps now best remembered.
