The first edition of the collected sermons of Church of England clergyman William Stephens (1692-1732), sometime Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford, and Vicar of St. Andrew's, Plymouth. The book, dedicated to the Lord Bishop of Exeter, was published at the bequest of Stephen's widow, Gertrude. The lengthy list of subscribers is unsurprisingly predominantly comprised of members of the clergy, though notably includes diplomatist and politician Horatio [Horace] Walpole, first Baron Walpole of Wolterton (1678-1757).
