ANNOTATED BY THE AUTHOR
Riquet of the tuft.
London.
Macmillan & Co., 1880.
First edition.
8vo.
[7], 172pp, [2]. With half-title. Bound in elaborately contemporary gilt-tooled turquoise morocco, lettered in gilt to spine. Rubbed, with fading to spine and slight cracking to joints. Marbled endpapers, internally clean and crisp. With a loosely inserted contemporary photograph of the author to FEP. Inked ownership inscription to FFEP: 'Maud Brooke from my father', and frequent marginal and textual annotations in the author's hand pencilled throughout.
A handsomely bound copy of Stopford Brooke's verse drama Riquet of the Tuft. The drama takes its name from the French literary fairy tale Riquet with the Tuft, telling the story of an ugly prince who is aided by a fairy in marrying a beautiful princess.
This copy, gifted to Maud Brooke by her father, features extensive annotations, often discarding and rewriting whole lines, and even stanzas, of verse. For instance, the line 'Make it a reason; it is Lanval's way.' is corrected to 'No, no! Not for the world! Pursue your tale'. A second edition of the drama was never published, but these notes suggest a degree of dissatisfaction with the printed original. It is therefore possible that this copy was worked up with the view to another edition that never materialised.
