SIGNED BY A FEMALE BINDER

WALPOLE, Hugh. Fortitude: a romance.

London. Macmillan and Co., 1933.
8vo. viii, 432, 6pp. With three terminal leaves of publisher's advertisements. Preliminary leaves partially misbound. Contemporary gilt-tooled red morocco, A.E.G. lettered in gilt to front lower turn-in: 'B. H. H. EASTER 1935. I. C.', signed 'Katharine Pountney' to rear lower turn-in. Lightly rubbed, some surface loss to spine. Decorated endpapers, very occasional light spotting.
The first of Hugh Walpole's (1884-1941) London novels series, handsomely bound by American-born bookbinder Katharine Pountney [née Chandler] (b. 1898), recorded as operating in London into the 1930s, though otherwise for whom biographical details are frustratingly scant.

The British Library hold an example of Pountney's work (Book Binder Index Vol. 17, p.30).
