Attractively bound in contemporary burgundy calf, richly tooled in gilt and blind, marbled edges. Lightly rubbed, spines heavily sunned. Marbled endpapers, very occasional light spotting.
An attractively bound copy of William Gilpin's (1724-1804) Remarks on Forest Scenery, first published 1791. Gilpin, a Church of England cleric and travel writer known for defining the Picturesque, would apply his knowledge of landscape painting to visual description in these volumes. This edition retains much of Gilpin's original order and intention, but with new illustrations by Kidd and Forbes.
