A gilded edition of the hugely popular Bon Gaultier ballads, compiled under pseudonym by Scottish poets William Edmonstoune Ayton (1813-1865) and Sir Theodore Martin (1816-1909). First published in magazines in 1845, this copy is beautifully illustrated by Alfred Crowquill (i.e. Alfred Henry Forrester) (1804-1872). Divided into 'English', 'Spanish', 'American', and 'Miscellaneous', the collection of parodied ballads pokes fun at romantic, embellished verse.
