PHOTOGRAPHED BY THE RFC AND RE
[Cover title: Salonika fire, 18-19th August, 1917].
[s.i.].
[s.n, s.d., c. 1917]
Oblong 8vo.
24 leaves, each with a laid down silver gelatin photographic print, loose in grey paper foling portfolio. A trifle rubbed to extremities; slight occasional spotting to mounts.
A rare and complete photographic memorial of the Great Thessaloniki Fire of August 1917, which destroyed in excess of 9,000 houses whilst burning for 32 hours, leading to the emigration of around half the Jewish population of Greece's second city.
These evocative photographs, taken in the immediate aftermath by the RFC and Royal Engineering Survey Company, depict the extent of the damage. There is something almost brutalist in the presentation of the collection, the folder blocked in harsh fonts on cement-coloured paper, which further emphasises the images of total destruction that lay within.
Rare; OCLC and COPAC together locate just two copies - at the NLS and Princeton.
