The first edition of a collection of verse by Elijah Fenton (1683-1730), English poet best known for his work assisting Alexander Pope, his neighbour, in translating The Odyssey. This volume contains his work on the Eleventh Book of Homer's epic, translated in 'Milton's Style', as well as several other original poetic compositions, invoking the classical, pastoral and medieval. Included amongst these is a verse titled 'To Mr. Pope' - a reminder of their friendship, which would endure beyond Fenton's death, with Pope penning a heartfelt epitaph for his memorial in St Michael and St Mary Magdalene's Church, Easthampstead.
