The first edition of antiquary Richard Carew's (1555-1620) early survey of the county of Cornwall; a pioneering example of county history. Dedicated to Sir Walter Raleigh, the book provides a general description of the county through the narrative of a perambulation from east to west. The work contains relatively little history, though Carew provides great detail on topics such as seine fishing, the economics and techniques of the tin mining industry, parish Feast days, the rules of hurling, as well as a defence of church ales. Ever fascinated by language, Carew discusses the local dialects and provides an early account of sign language between the deaf.
