Small quarto. [4], 233pp, [3]. Beautifully extra-illustrated with 13 vignette drawings, variously in ink and wash and pencil, and two further inserted plates, each ink on paper, all by J. Ernest Boilvin. Finely bound in contemporary gilt- tooled marbled blue 'Spanish Calf', gilt-tooled inner dentelles. Slightly rubbed, corners a little bumped, unobstrusive old scuff marks to lower board neatly refurbished.
A finely presented copy of Maupassant's introspective novel of travel and the illusion of youth, in Europe and North Africa, uniquely adorned with fine illustrations by J. Ernest Boilvin, of whom we have found no trace.

First published in Paris by the same publisher as this 20th edition in 1890, this copy includes illustrations of typical views of France, Tunis, and Cairo, alongside portraits of several individuals.
