8vo. [20], 259pp. Contemporary black half-calf, tooled in gilt and blind, marbled boards. Marbled endpapers and edges. Rubbed and marked, with surface loss to joints and corners, joints starting. Heavier spotting to first blank fly-leaves, very occasional light spotting to text.
The first edition of Scottish writer Josiah Walker's (1761-1831) translation of the fables of Louis Jules Mancini, duc de Nivernais (1716-1798). Primarily remembered as a biographer of Robert Burns, Walker served as professor of Humanity at Glasgow University from 1815 until his death in 1831. He was urged to translate Nivernais by Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart (1753-1828).
