An abridged edition of the celebrated debut novel of Annie Shepherd Swan (1859-1943), Scottish journalist and fiction writer, who also wrote under the names David Lyall and Mrs Burnett Smith. The romance, set in the Scottish Borders, earned her an autographed letter of recognition from Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Her work was so affecting that British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone wrote to The Scotsman upon reading the novel, declaring it 'beautiful as a work of art' for its 'truly living sketches of Scottish character' .
