116pp. Original publisher's dark green cloth, title lettered in gilt to upper board. Lightly rubbed and marked, with scratches and damp-staining to boards. Front hinge detached at title. Endpapers browned, light scattered spotting.
The only volume of poetry published by Elizabeth Smith, of whom little is known. It is speculated that she is buried at the church of St. Mary and St. Michael, Great Malvern, and may have been born in the nearby village of Upton on Severn around 1790. The volume contains a dedicatory poem addressed to local benefactress Lady Lyttelton, or Sarah (Spencer) Lyttelton (1787-1870), of whom Smith may have been a contemporary.
The lengthy - and decorated - list of subscribers includes Lady Jane Davy (1780-1855), wife of inventor Sir Humphry Davy, and the infamous Juliana Donovan, Countess of Anglesey (d. 1777), widow of the notorious Richard Annesley, 6th Earl of Anglesey. The list for the second edition adds the illustrious Prince Leopold of Saxe-Cobourg, subscribing for 20 copies, and the Duchess of Kent, for eight.
