London. Printed for R. Dodsley, 1741. Second edition.
8vo. 35pp, [1]. Without half-title or terminal advertisement leaf. Stitched in modern marbled paper wrappers, lightly rubbed. Assorted manuscript annotations throughout, with some obstruction to text on p.11; inscription to foot of terminal leaf reads 'A Contempt of Strong Allurements'.
The second edition of a mournful lyric by minor English poet and noted landscape theorist William Shenstone (1714-1763), first published anonymously several months prior. This edition was addressed to his neighbour and friend George Lyttelton (1709 – 1773), who, alongside Shenstone himself, contributed significantly to the development of landscape gardening in the eighteenth century; among his projects was included the development of Hagley Hall and its park, in which a touching memorial to Shenstone can be found.
