A coherent sammelband of eighteenth-century devotional dialogues, predominantly comprised of hagiographic funereal sermons; a notable exception being the sole edition of an anonymous discourse concerning Christian forgiveness.
The pamphlet, attributed in an early manuscript hand to Church of England clergyman Thomas Hall, evaluates the Epistle to the Hebrews 8:12 'For I will be merciful to their Unrighteousness, and their Sins and their Iniquities will I remember no more'. The opening lines make clear that this is not the first occasion that the author has considered this subject. Previously, we learn, that the exoneration of transgressions had been discussed doctrinally, however in this instance the author proposes to consider forgiveness 'casuistically or practically', posing the pertinent question 'How shall any know that they are the happy Persons whose Sins are forgiven, or how may we know whether our Sins are forgiven, or not?'
