HEALDE, Thomas. The new pharmacopoeia of the royal college of physicians of london.

London. Printed by J. W. Galabin, for T. Longman, 1788. First edition.
8vo. xvi, 343pp. Original publisher's blue paper boards, rebacked in contemporary brown calf. Heavily rubbed and marked, with surface wear to edges, toned. Without free endpapers, initial advertisement leaf and final printed leaf used as pastedowns. Spotting throughout, particularly to endpapers.
The first edition of the earliest Pharmacopoeia, or the standard 'recipe book' of medical compounds, to be printed in English. Developed by the Royal College of Physicians of London, who had published the compendium in Latin for the 170 years prior, this edition was rapidly reprinted, reaching three editions in its initial year. Healde's work would influence the research of John Latham, whose revised, and adapted, fifth edition would supersede it in 1791.
