8vo. 24 leaves, 48pp. With a pasted-in photographic portrait frontispiece of the author and engraved title page. Original publisher's printed pictorial blue paper wrappers. Rubbed and marked, with spotting to wrappers, heavy loss to spine, Heavy spotting to initial leaves, scattered spotting to text.
The sole edition of a collection of poems in 'national English' by Dorset philologist, mathematician, writer and artist William Barnes (1801-1886). Barnes was best known for his Dorset dialect poetry, first published in periodicals, and later in several collections, including, Hwomely Rhymes (1858). These unpublished verses were printed at the school in Winterborne Monkton over which Barnes had previously presided as schoolmaster and founder; the front wrapper and title bear engravings of the church at Winterborne-Came, of which he had then become rector.
