ANSTEY, F.. Baboo jabberjee b.a..

London. J. M. Dent & Co. , 1897. Second edition.
8vo. xvi, 272pp. With half-title, an engraved frontispiece and 28 further engraved plates. Original publisher's gilt-decorated blue cloth. Rubbed and marked, with bumping to corners, wax-staining to spine and upper board, chipping to head and foot of spine, and light wear to extremities.
The second edition, in original cloth, of a fashionable novel by English comic writer Sir Thomas Anstey Guthrie (1856 – 1934); originally serialised in Punch under the title 'Jottings and Tittlings by Hurry Bungsho Jabberjee', the fictitious autobiography saw the titular character recounting his studies - and further escapades - in England. A distinct representation of the 'Bengali Baboo', a caricature invented by Anglo-Indian colonists who depicted East Indians as over-educated, bumbling and indiscreet, Baboo Jabberjee remained a popular depiction of the late-Victorian Anglicised Indian stereotype, and is often compared and contrasted today with Kipling's Hurree Babu.
