Across the threshold.
Middletown.
Harold McNair, [1917].
First edition.
8vo.
144pp. Original publisher's green cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Very lightly rubbed. Small loss to upper right corner of FFEP; otherwise internally clean and crisp.
The posthumously collected works of Baron Vane, an eccentric amateur poet of Middletown, Pennsylvania, noted in the preface to have been 'considered an idler who wasted his time and ability in aimless exertions'. Befitting the publication date, one piece, 'Rank and File', addresses the outbreak of the Great War, rejecting, in animal metaphor, the commands of the 'landed men', who, through their wealth and social status shall never know the 'manly pain...heroism...and agony' of the common man, conscripted to the trenches against his will.
