The sole edition, published by his father, Charles Swain Thomas, of a collection of amateur poetry by University of Boston sophomore Thornton Swain Thomas (1899-1921), who died unexpectedly from complications after surgery for appendicitis at just 22 years old. The verse within, largely concerned with the natural world and the passing of time, features several pointed allusions to United States intervention in the First World War, with one poem, 'The Ship of State', praising the prowess of the US navy, piloted not by fate, but the 'hand of God...on the wheel'.
