An out of sequence copy of the limited - and sole - edition run of Hughes' Orts, which features a distinctive frontispiece illustration by American sculptor Leonard Baskin (1922-2000). The unusual title stems from a Yorkshire dialect word meaning ‘leavings’; the Rainbow Press described the volume upon publication as 'A first edition of 63 poems, many of which were written for the second part of Gaudete (Faber 1977) but not included therein'. Several of the new poems drew on Hughes' experiences reading Speaking of Siva (1973), A.K. Ramanujan’s translations of sacred Southern Indian vacanas of the Virasaiva religious movement.
